Parablu BluVault FAQs

Get answers to frequently asked questions about BluVault

1. Which endpoint Operating Systems does Parablu support?
BluVault for Endpoints can backup data from Windows, Mac and Linux Operating Systems. Most common versions of these Operating Systems are supported.
2. How do I know if my endpoint is configured for backup?
Go to the system tray and right click on the Parablu agent installed on your endpoint. Go to “My Backup Files” after selecting “Backup” and you can see if your endpoint is configured for backup. If the Parablu agent is not installed on your endpoint, contact your administrator.
3. Where is my endpoint data backed up?
BluVault typically backs up the endpoint data to a cloud target, although it is also possible to back up on an on-premise server with locally attached disk. Supported cloud platforms are Microsoft One Drive for Business, Microsoft Azure Blob Storage, Amazon S3, Google Drive and IBM SoftLayer Object Storage.
4. How can I use my OneDrive for Business storage for backing up my endpoint data?

BluVault has a unique interface with OneDrive for Business, which allows the endpoint data to be backed up to the corresponding user’s OneDrive for Business storage. It uses a single service account that your administrator configures, to access different users’ storage space.

5. Who can view my backed up data on cloud?
The data is encrypted in-house before it gets stored on cloud. The encryption keys are not stored along with the data. It is hence impossible for any outside party (including the cloud vendor) to gain access to the data. Apart from you, it is also possible for your administrators to have access to data, in case they need to restore it for you.
6. Will the endpoints see a performance impact during backup?
There is some impact, but Parablu has worked hard to make sure it is minimal. We do this in several ways. For one, the BluVault backup solution has the intelligence to restart backups from the previous point. BluVault also supports incremental backups. Hence after the initial full backup, only changed files are backed up. And for large files, our partial file transfer feature ensures that only the parts of the file that have changed are backed up. Most of the data processing (like encryption and other obfuscation) is done on the server after the data moves from the endpoint.
7. How can I restore the backed up data?
Right click on the Parablu Agent installed on your endpoint and click on “Restore” after selecting “Backup”. BluVault supports user driven self-service restores.
8. Can I restore all the data backed up from my device?
Yes, you can restore all the data backed up from a device in a single step.
9. Can I restore a previous version of a backed up file?
Yes, you can restore a previous version of a file. The number of versions to be stored is configurable.
10. When does the backup get initiated?
The backups get initiated according to a schedule set in the backup policy. Administrators can create multiple backup policies and assign different sets of users to them. Administrators can view and edit the policy settings from the web portal by right clicking on the Parablu Agent and selecting “Backup Settings” after clicking “Backup”.
11. Is the usage of cloud storage optimized?
Yes, the BluVault solution uses compression and deduplication techniques to ensure optimal use of cloud storage. Also, our incremental and partial file transfer features ensure that we transfer only the smallest required amount of data for subsequent backups.
12. What kind of reporting is available on BluVault?
Reports regarding various aspects of backup, restore and storage usage are available. The administrator can view them by going to the home page after selecting ‘Backup” and “Backup Settings” on the Parablu Agent. Most of the reports can also be exported into a Microsoft Excel format.
13. What types of authentication are performed for the device and user?
Only authenticated users are permitted for backup. BluVault interfaces with the enterprise’s AD server or Azure AD setup to authenticate permitted users.
14. Does BluVault backup files in use?
Yes, BluVault can back up files in use – even PST files.
15. How scalable is the solution?
BluVault has been designed to support a 100,000+ user base. Each component is horizontally scalable without any bottlenecks.
16. Can I change the encryption settings?
Yes, the administrator can change the salt which is an initialization parameter for computing the encryption key.
17. How many devices can be configured for backup per user?
BluVault supports multiple devices per user for backup. Depending on your license, it can be configured by the administrator.
18. Do I have to be in the enterprise network for the backups to happen?
The software doesn’t require that you be on the company network for backups to occur. But this can be configured by the administrator as required by your company’s policies.
